SLIIT’s Higher Diploma in Nursing offers a comprehensive three-year program that prepares students for a seamless transition to Deakin University, Australia, to complete their final year of the nursing degree. Deakin’s nursing program is ranked among the Top 5 in Australia, providing graduates with globally recognized qualifications. Upon completion, students are eligible to apply for registration as a Registered Nurse (RN) with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia.  

The program is delivered by a panel of experienced nursing professionals and features a state-of-the-art skills lab to enhance hands-on learning. Students gain practical exposure through leading private and government hospitals in Sri Lanka, ensuring they develop essential clinical competencies. Learning is further supported by SLIIT’s advanced Learning Management System (LMS), offering an engaging and interactive educational experience. This pathway equips students with the expertise and practical skills necessary for a successful career in nursing, both locally and internationally. 

Higher Diploma in Nursing Deakin Pathway programme consists of a theory component, in-house practice component done at the nursing skills lab at the faculty and the clinical component. Theory component in the programme consists of basic science modules, clinical modules and professional modules. In-House practical component includes the original demonstrations of nursing procedures done by lecturers, students’ self-practice with the lecturers’ guidance and return demonstrations in-front of the lecturers. After the students are competent enough, students are sent to the hospitals for the clinical training. 

Upon successful completion of the program the graduates will, 

  • Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of theories, principles, and concepts to deliver safe, effective, and evidence-based care across diverse healthcare settings. 

  • Integrate theoretical knowledge with practical application to meet the needs of clients in a variety of situations related to health. 

  • Demonstrate effective communication with clients, healthcare team and other stakeholders ensuring healthy interpersonal relationships. 

  • Demonstrate the ability to work collaboratively within multidisciplinary healthcare teams exercising effective leadership skills.

Local A/Ls: Minimum of 3 "S" passes obtained from the following subject streams: Biological Science, Physical Science, Bio Systems Technology or Engineering Technology streams AND an Interview.

Cambridge/Edexcel A/Ls: Minimum of 3 "D" passes with any combination of the following subjects: Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Psychology, Computer Science or Information Technology AND an Interview.

successful completion of SLIIT CITY UNI Foundation Certificate in Health & Life Sciences AND pass an Interview.
