This interdisciplinary research cluster is dedicated to advancing scientific innovations that promote both environmental sustainability and human health. A central focus is on adding value to Sri Lanka’s abundant natural resources—including ilmenite, graphite, and clay—and converting agricultural and marine waste materials such as rice husks, coconut husks, fruit waste, and shrimp shells into high-value products for environmental applications. The cluster also emphasizes the design and development of advanced polymer- and nanomaterial-based delivery systems for the sustained release of pharmacologically active compounds, supporting improvements in drug efficacy. Further, the research group pioneers the development of novel biomaterials for dermatological applications, including wound healing and sun protection, bridging the gap between materials science and healthcare innovation. Through these research directions, the cluster seeks to generate sustainable solutions that are locally relevant, globally impactful, and aligned with long-term ecological and public health goals.
