Kushanthi is a an Assistant Professor attached to the School of Law, Faculty of Humanities and Sciences. She also functions as the Coordinator of the LLB(Hons) program of Liverpool John Moores University, UK, delivered at Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology (SLIIT).

Kushanthi has a B.A (Hons) in English Literature from the University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, an LLM degree from Deakin University, Australia, and a Ph.D in law from Monash University, Australia. She has won many scholarships and awards for her studies including the Monash Law School Foundation Scholarship and the Australian Postgraduate Award.

Kushanthi took oaths as an Attorney-at-Law of the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka in December 2004 and has about fourteen years’ experience in the legal field in various capacities such as a practicing Attorney-at-Law, a legal researcher and an academic. She has taught law at the Monash Law School (2011-2013), at the Royal Institute of Sri Lanka for the LLB(Hons) degree of University of London, UK (2013) and at the Asia Pacific Institute of Information Technology (APIIT) Sri Lanka for the LLB(Hons) degree of Staffordshire University, UK (2014-2018). Before joining SLIIT in October 2018, Kushanthi functioned as the Head of Law School at Asia Pacific Institute of Information Technology, Sri Lanka.

Kushanthi’s teaching interests include Contract Law, Criminal Law, Law of Sale, Export and International Trade Law, and Equity and Trusts. Her research interests include criminal law, legal philosophy, cyber-crime and anti-terrorism law.

Message from the Head

The vision of SLIIT School of Law is to nurture legally astute professionals equipped with critical thinking, ethical grounding, and adaptability to serve Sri Lanka and beyond. We are committed to delivering a comprehensive legal education that focuses on providing a sound grounding in core legal concepts and developing practical skills essential for today’s legal profession. Our School is well equipped with a highly qualified and skilled academic team comprising of professors, senior lectures, lecturers and experienced legal practitioners. Our academic team actively engages in research addressing contemporary legal issues and has secured multiple research grants, including a prestigious AHEAD research grant funded by the World Bank. 

 Our students benefit from excellent facilities, including a state-of-the-art library, a fully equipped moot court for advocacy training, and a vibrant university environment that encourages holistic growth. 

We offer two high quality LLB (Hons) programmes which meet the standards set by both local and international professional and accreditation bodies, ensuring global relevance and recognition: the LLB(Hons) Program of SLIIT and the franchised LLB(Hons) Law programme of the Liverpool John Moores University, UK 

The four-year full-time local LLB(Hons) program of SLIIT, approved by the Ministry of Higher Education, offers a comprehensive legal education that blends in-depth theoretical knowledge with practical skills. Designed to produce competitive legal professionals, the curriculum includes a wide range of modules in emerging areas such as IT law, health law, education law, and allows students to choose a research-focused or practice-oriented path in the final year through a dissertation or an internship. Specializations are also available in key areas such as public, civil, commercial and international law. 

The LLB (Hons) Law program from Liverpool John Moores University, offered at SLIIT, is a fully franchised UK degree designed to prepare students for successful legal careers both locally and globally. Recognized by the Council of Legal Education in Sri Lanka, it provides pathways to legal practice in both the UK and Sri Lanka. This three-year program includes core modules in English law and a range of optional subjects addressing contemporary issues and needs such as climate change and environmental law, regulation of artificial intelligence, and alternative dispute resolution. This program enables students to enjoy the benefits of an internationally recognized education and student experience while remaining in a familiar and supportive local environment.
