Message from the Head

The Department of Mechanical Engineering is dedicated to producing engineers with the knowledge and skills to meet modern industry demands and address national challenges. Our mission is to deliver a world-class education that equips future mechanical engineers to find sustainable solutions to the pressing engineering problems of today and tomorrow.

Our Bachelor’s degree program recently received Conditional Recognition from the Institution of Engineers Sri Lanka (IESL) — a significant achievement that makes us the first non-state university in Sri Lanka to obtain this recognition. Our curriculum is modern and student-centered, with delivery methods including lectures, tutorials, labs, and project work. Industrial training is a mandatory part of the program to ensure graduates are industry-ready. The curriculum meets both local and international accreditation standards. The Department has a well-qualified academic team supported by industry professionals who serve as visiting lecturers.

We provide excellent laboratory facilities, including a mechanical workshop and eight dedicated labs covering all major areas of mechanical engineering. We have established partnerships with industry for consultancy and research. For example the Bentley Computer Aided Engineering Unit, in collaboration with Bentley Motors UK, is a notable example. We are also actively involved in internationally funded projects such as ENSURE (Empowering NetZero Skills for Sri Lanka's Sustainable and Resilient Future) and the ThreeLanka Project (Training Hub for Renewable Energy Technologies), working alongside other state and international universities.

Looking ahead, we aim to expand our contributions through research and innovation, providing solutions to industry and national challenges. We also plan to introduce postgraduate programs in emerging areas to develop the skilled workforce required for Sri Lanka’s future growth.
