Chehan Charutha Weerasinghe is a talented chess player representing SLIIT, currently pursuing his degree in Data Science at the Faculty of Computing. SLIIT, known for its strong emphasis on technology and innovation, has been a supportive environment for Chehan's academic and athletic journey. His rise in chess has been remarkable, securing his place as one of Sri Lanka’s top youth players. Chehan has represented Sri Lanka in prestigious tournaments, earning three medals at the West Asian Youth Chess Championship in the UAE, competing in the Asian Youth Chess Championship, and participating in the World Youth & Cadets Chess Championships in Greece and Russia, as well as the Commonwealth Chess Championship in India.
His exceptional achievements earned him Sri Lanka Schools Sports Colors and the title of Best All-Round Sportsman at St. Sylvester’s College. Selected for Sri Lanka’s National A Pool in 2020 and 2021, Chehan achieved 7th place at the Sri Lanka National Chess Championship 2021 and earned three National Blitz Chess Championship medals. With career-best Blitz and Classical ratings of 1989 and 1853, Chehan’s dedication to the game continues to inspire the next generation of chess players at SLIIT and beyond.
