As the Head of the Department of Mathematics Department, my main desire is to provide the best service to the students who follow Mathematics and Statistics modules offered by the department and this, in order to get a better recognition for the Department.
Before I joined SLIIT, I was the Senior Professor in Applied Statistics at the University of Moratuwa (UoM), until I retired on 30th September 2020 and thereafter was a visiting lecturer at UoM. I joined the UoM as a Senior Lecturer Grade I and was promoted to Professor and Senior Professor during my 14 years’ service and was the Head of Mathematics Department, Faculty of Engineering, UoM from 2011-2017. Before I joined UoM, I served 25 years at the Coconut Research Institutes (CRI), Lunuwila, as a Statistician, Senior Statistician, Principal Statistician and finally the Head of the Statistics Division ( 2001-2007). I have significantly contributed to the CRI and to the Department of Mathematics of the University of Moratuwa.
I was a commonwealth scholar to New Zealand in 1984 and a Rothermated scholar to UK in 1996. I received the President’s Award for Scientific Publications in four years.
I was a visiting professor in the Department of Mathematics & Statistics at the University of Maryland, Baltimore Country, USA, Department of Statistics, National Chengchi University, Taiwan, and Department of Statistics, University of Connecticut, USA.
I am a Fellow of the Royal Statistics Soceity in the UK and a Fellow of the Institute of Applied Statistics Sri Lanka (IASSL). I was the President of the IASSL in 2014 and I have been a member of the Executive Council since 2011. My research areas are Multivaraite Statistics, Regression Modelling, Time Series Modelling, and Climate Change Analysis. I have supervised 3 Ph. D.s and nine M. Phils in addition to about 50 M. Sc. students.
I have made a significant contribution to popularizing applied statistics at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Moratuwa. I have more than 35 years of post qualifying experince in statistical advisory/consultancy and made an impact in Sri Lanka in the field of Applied Statistics. I have published around 50 research papers in international and national refereed journals, and around 50 conference proceedings both locally and internationlly.
